The meaning of blue
The colour blue can evoke a wide range of emotions. Blue is often associated with feelings of sadness in the English language, singing the blues, feeling blue etc. It is also seen as a cool colour, water freezes and blue is always the first colour that we associate with that, so psychologically we sometimes think of blue as cold to the touch.
Blue also has many spiritual connotations, it is associated with peace and has religious meaning in many cultures and traditions for example, the god Krishna has blue skin, the Virgin Mary is generally depicted wearing blue robes etc. The sky after all is blue, so it is the colour we see when we look up to the heavens.
In interiors though blue is usually associated with a sense of calm. Blue as mentioned is a colour often found in nature such as the pale blue of a daytime sky or the rich dark blue of a deep pool of water. It is for this reason perhaps that people often describe the colour blue as calm and serene. It is a good colour to relax with as it can evoke feelings of tranquillity, the same feelings that we have when sitting close to water. Blue has even been shown in studies to lower the pulse rate.
So if you want to help make your life a little less stressful, using a splash of blue in your home can help you unwind and relax.
